This past Sunday, March 2, we hosted a Kids Open Mat at Lōgōs Jiu Jitsu Westminster, and it was an incredible experience for our young athletes! The mats were packed with energy, excitement, and hard work as our kids took full advantage of this special training opportunity. Open mats like these are more than just extra mat time—they are essential for the growth and development of our kids’ team, both in skill and mindset.
Why Open Mat is So Important for Our Kids
1. Extra Practice = Faster Progress
Regular class time is great for structured learning, but open mats allow kids to experiment, try new techniques, and sharpen their existing skills in a more relaxed setting. This additional mat time helps them develop confidence in their Jiu Jitsu and see real improvements faster.
2. More Live Rounds = Stronger Competitors
For kids who compete—or want to in the future—open mat is a game-changer. More live rolling means they get to test their techniques against a variety of training partners. They learn how to adapt, problem-solve, and stay composed under pressure, just like they would in a tournament.
3. Strengthening Team Bonds
One of the best parts of open mat is the sense of camaraderie it builds. Without the structure of a regular class, kids naturally coach each other, give advice, and celebrate each other’s progress. This helps create a tight-knit team environment where everyone pushes each other to improve.
4. Developing Adaptability and Creativity
During class, kids follow a curriculum, drilling specific techniques. Open mat lets them be creative, try different moves, and figure out their own unique style of Jiu Jitsu. This type of learning is crucial for their growth as martial artists.

At open mat, kids get to roll with different training partners—including those they don’t usually match up with in class. This helps them get comfortable with new challenges and develop resilience when facing tougher opponents.

Our Kids Open Mat on March 2 was such a success that we’re looking forward to hosting more in the future! We love seeing our young athletes take ownership of their training and put in the extra work to grow as martial artists.
